Free hot water, most of the year
Solar thermal is different from solar PV: instead of generating electricity, panels on your roof heat water directly, which is stored in your hot water cylinder ready to use. Even on an overcast Devon day, a solar collector still captures usable heat, just less of it. You'll typically get the majority of your hot water free from the sun between spring and autumn, with your boiler topping up the rest.
